🪕 Introducing Waltz Time
Add Flow and Grace to Your Playing
You’ve reached a new rhythmic trail on your banjo journey — Waltz Time (3/4). This is where your playing begins to dance.
Until now, you’ve lived mostly in the world of Common Time (4/4) — steady, driving, predictable. But Waltz Time is different. It sways, it breathes, it moves in gentle circles rather than straight lines. Think of it like trading marching boots for dancing shoes.
Take this module slow. Listen to the rhythm, count out loud, and let the new timing settle naturally into your hands. It’s a different feel entirely — more expressive, more human, and once it clicks, incredibly rewarding.
🎵 Your Exercises
Watch this video lesson in full then work on the 4 brand new exercises presented to you in the video. these exercises to work on are:
Exercise 1 – The Bum-Ditty-Ditty Foundation
Focus on the first string and build that Bum-Ditty-Ditty rhythm. This re-conditions your timing brain to the new 3-count pattern. Say the numbers aloud as you play — “1-2-3, 1-2-3”. If you slip back into 4/4, stop, breathe, and restart. You’re teaching your muscle memory to waltz.
Exercise 2 – Mixing Techniques, Keeping Time
Experiment with your clawhammer strikes while keeping the 1-2-3 pulse steady. There’s no single right answer here — explore! You’ll feel when the rhythm wobbles off the waltz. Keep the tempo slow and count “1-&-2-&-3-&” until the groove becomes second nature.
Exercise 3 – Expanding the Waltz
Now spread that rhythm across three strings. Use your melodic clawhammer technique to connect the notes smoothly. Aim for flow — each note should roll into the next like steps in a graceful dance.
Exercise 4 – Waltzing Your Favourite Tune
Here’s where the magic happens: take one of your favourite clawhammer tunes and re-imagine it in 3/4 time. Try something simple, like Boil Them Cabbage Down. It’ll feel awkward at first, but once your hands and ears sync up, you’ll hear that familiar melody come alive in a completely new way.
