Thanks so much for diving into my lesson on the Alternate String Pull Off (ASPO)!

As you know, the ASPO is one of those little gems that can really bring your clawhammer playing to life. It adds texture, rhythm, and a touch of flair once you’ve built a solid foundation with your bum-dit-ty groove.

About This Exercise

In the download below, you’ll find a tab for “Cluck Old Hen” with the ASPO clearly marked to guide your practice.

  • The first exercise keeps things straightforward, helping you lock in the feel.

  • The final variation adds the 5th string, creating a rolling flow of eighth notes that’s both fun and challenging to play.

A Few Practice Tips

  • Make sure your banjo is tuned to G-Modal (gDGCD) by raising your second string from B to C.

  • If the ASPO feels tough at first, return to your bum-dit-ty rhythm, clawhammer momentum, and simple frettingto keep everything solid.

  • Take your time — these techniques build gradually, but the payoff in your playing is huge.
