Another Banjo Sidequest

One of the real joys of playing the banjo is discovering how different tunings can completely transform your sound and spark new creative ideas. Exploring tunings like this isn’t just fun—it’s one of the most effective ways to grow as a player.

We’ve already dipped our toes into Sawmill tuning (G-Modal) back in the Cluck Old Hen lesson from the Hiker Module. Today, we’re setting off into Double C tuning. In the video above, I’ll show you exactly how to get there from Standard Open G, step by step. We’ll also cover four essential chords to help you start making music right away.

I used to avoid Double C tuning, thinking I’d somehow “unlearn” what I’d worked so hard on in Open G—but that fear turned out to be completely unfounded. In fact, when you return to Open G after spending time in other tunings, you often find that your skills have improved. The muscle memory, finger strength, and musical awareness you build in Double C will enhance your playing across the board.

So don’t be afraid to venture out—this is where growth happens. Double C is a perfect place to stretch your rhythm and melody chops and start crafting your own homemade music. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.

Grab your banjo, tune up, and let’s see what shows up when you start to play. You never know where it might take you—and that’s where the magic lives.
