  • Both options work — and they’re designed to complement each other — but they suit slightly different learning styles.

The Path of the Hobo learning journal is ideal if you enjoy working independently and like having something physical to guide you. It provides structure, daily prompts, progress tracking, and scannable QR codes that link to guided video lessons. It’s a brilliant self-paced companion that fits in your banjo case and helps you stay consistent.

The Banjo Adventures membership goes a step further by adding support, accountability, and guidance. Inside the membership, you’re following a clear step-by-step roadmap with direct access to me and a friendly beginner-focused community. When questions come up (and they always do), you’re not left guessing — you can ask, get feedback, and keep moving forward with confidence.

Most beginners don’t give up because they aren’t improving — they give up because they’re unsure whether they’re doing things right. The membership removes that uncertainty and helps people progress faster and with far less frustration.

Many members choose to use both: the book as a daily practice companion, and the membership as their support system and safety net.

If you’re happy learning completely on your own, the book may be enough.
If you want reassurance, motivation, and guidance along the way, the membership is the best place to start.

  • Short answer: No — Banjo Adventures is designed for 5-string banjo only.

Four-string banjos (tenor or plectrum) use different tunings and are played with a completely different technique. Clawhammer banjo relies on the 5th string and a specific right-hand approach that simply doesn’t translate to a 4-string instrument.

  • Answer: No.
Banjo Adventures is designed specifically for non-musical adults and complete beginners. Everything starts from zero, with no assumed knowledge.

  • Answer: Small, consistent sessions.
Short daily practice (even 10–20 minutes) is encouraged over long, infrequent sessions. Progress is built around consistency, not hours.

  • Answer: Yes — it’s designed for adults.
Most members are adults who are learning later in life, often with jobs, families, and limited time. The pace and teaching style reflect that.

  • Answer: Just a 5-string banjo and basic essentials (Neck strap).
No special setup required. Open-back or resonator is fine. Extras are optional, not mandatory.

  • Answer: Not formal 1-to-1 lessons, but you do get real direct access to Ben Dorning.

Members get guidance, feedback, and answers directly from Ben inside the Discord community, without being left to struggle alone.

  • Answer: Clawhammer banjo only (Also known as Frailing Banjo / Old Time Banjo)
Clear focus, no style-hopping, no confusion.
