Frailing Strum Practice (1–4–1–4)
When I was learning, I used to spend hours with exercises just like this. Repeating simple patterns helped me lock in the frailing motion, build solid timing and rhythm, and learn how to keep going even when mistakes crept in. Instead of stopping every time something went wrong, I learned to play through it — and that’s where confidence really starts to grow.
This is a simple, relaxed play-along exercise designed to help you feel comfortable with the basic clawhammer frailing strum.
In this lesson, we’ll use an easy repeating pattern — strings 1–4–1–4 — and play it together at a steady, unhurried pace. I’ll be playing right along with you, so you can settle into the rhythm, improve your timing, and start to feel what it’s like to really groove with the banjo.
✅ This exercise is great for:
Absolute beginners just getting started
Anyone struggling to make the frailing strum feel natural
Players who want a simple, musical daily warm-up
🎬 What you’ll work on:
Strengthening your clawhammer rhythm
Coordinating your right-hand motion smoothly
Building confidence with simple, repeatable patterns
Take your time, stay relaxed, and don’t worry about mistakes — this is about feeling the rhythm, not playing perfectly. Even a few minutes of focused play like this can make a big difference over time.
