Level 1 Tab: G-Modal Tuning with some drop thumb

Quick History Nugget

Cluck Old Hen is one of the most famous old-time Appalachian banjo tunes. Its origins trace back to the 19th century, and it has been a staple of old-time string bands ever since. The tune is often played in a driving, steady rhythm, making it perfect for beginners learning clawhammer technique. While some versions include simple “cluck old hen” lyrics, it’s usually performed instrumentally, giving players a chance to focus on rhythm and melody.

Lyrics

(Traditional Appalachian folk tune — mostly instrumental, but sometimes sung with a few simple lines.)

My old hen’s a good old hen
She lays eggs for the railroad men
Sometimes 8 and sometimes ten
That’s enough for the railroad men

Cluck old hen cluck and sing
You ain’t laid an egg since late last spring
Cluck old hen cluck and squall
Ain’t laid an egg since late last fall

Cluck old hen cluck when I tell you
Cluck old hen or I’m gonna sell you
Last time she cackled cackled in the lot
Next time she cackles cackle in the pot

My old hen she’s a good old hen
She lays eggs for the railroad men
Sometimes 1 sometimes two
Sometimes enough for the whole damn crew

(Most versions of Cluck Old Hen are primarily instrumental fiddle or banjo tunes, so these lyrics are optional; focus is on the melody.)
