If you're new to the banjo, you might enjoy this Complete Beginner’s Guide to Learning Banjo, where I walk through everything you need to know to start your banjo adventure.

Let’s be honest…

Most people learning the banjo hit this point where they think:

  • “I can play…”

  • “I can sing…”

  • “…but there’s no way I can do both at the same time.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Before I created Banjo Adventures, I couldn’t sing and play my banjo either.
Not because it was impossible… but because I’d never actually learned how to combine the two in a simple, practical way.

And truthfully… I avoided it for a long time.

Why Singing and Playing Banjo Feels So Hard

It’s not because you’re “not musical”.

It’s because you’re trying to do two separate things at once:

  • Your hands are focused on rhythm and timing

  • Your voice is trying to follow along

  • And your brain is stuck in the middle trying to control everything

That’s where it breaks down.

What you actually need is a way to blend your voice and playing together naturally… so it doesn’t feel like juggling.

The Easiest Way to Start (The ABC Method)

Here’s where most people go wrong…

They try to sing lyrics straight away.

That’s too much.

Instead, we simplify everything using something you already know… the alphabet.

Here’s how it works:

  • We use the melody of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

  • But instead of singing the original lyrics…

  • We sing the ABC song

Why this works:

  • You already know the sequence

  • You don’t have to think about words or storytelling

  • Your brain has less to process

👉 Which means you can focus purely on syncing your voice with your playing.

So instead of trying to “perform”…
you’re just calmly matching sound to movement.

It becomes:

  • Predictable

  • Repeatable

  • And most importantly… doable

This is a full follow-along lesson.

By the end of it… you won’t just understand the idea —
you’ll actually be singing and playing at the same time.

What You’ll Learn in This Lesson

  • How to sync your voice with your banjo playing

  • A simple step-by-step method that removes overwhelm

  • How to make your playing feel more natural and musical

  • A repeatable process you can use with other songs

This Isn’t a Singing Lesson 😅

Let’s clear this up…

I’m not a professional singer, and this isn’t about becoming one.

This is about unlocking a way to bring your playing to life.

Because once you start combining your voice with your banjo…
everything starts to feel more connected… more expressive… and a lot more enjoyable.

Easy Songs to Practice Singing and Playing Banjo

If you’re just getting started, these types of songs work really well:

  • Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

  • The ABC Song

  • Simple folk melodies with predictable phrasing

They’re ideal because the melody is already familiar…
which means you can focus on coordination instead of memory.
